ANS Lab’s Feature Friday is now a podcast!
The goal of our long-standing Feature Friday initiative has always been to give you a platform to share your experiences, expertise, and passions. This platform hosts holistic conversations promoting stellar ANS community members and true allies, placing a focus on the fantastic work being done in the community to help close the employment gap for Blacks and ANS between the ages of 18-35. We inspire our audience by exploring your personal stories, what drives you, and your accomplishments. This year’s 12 podcast episodes, which come out the last Friday of every month, are hosted by Aaliyah Arab-Smith and Trevor Silver, with giveaways of two $50.00 e-gift cards for every episode thanks to ongoing collaboration with ShiftKey Labs. In this episode of ...Feature Friday, Karen shares how her upbringing in Cherry Brook/Lake Loon, her Jamaican father’s belief in education and the influence of community leaders like David Woods helped shape the educator and principal she would become. She reflects on her journey from student leadership to teaching, administration and eventually becoming principal of Auburn Drive High School.
Karen also takes us inside the creation of Nova Scotia’s first Afrocentric Cohort — a program designed to encourage students of African ancestry to pursue higher-level courses while learning in an environment grounded in culture, identity, community and collective responsibility.
The conversation explores the importance of seeing Black students’ potential early, moving beyond tokenism, maintaining parental involvement throughout a child’s education and creating school environments where students feel challenged, supported and seen.Show More
