ANS Weekly Community Grapevine – November 10th 2025
<!–

Today, we honour the legacy of Black Canadians whose resilience, service, and sacrifice have shaped our nation’s history and continue to inspire generations.

Good Evening EveryONE,
During the First World War, many Black Canadians were passionate to serve their country, but systemic racism barred them from enlisting alongside white soldiers. After years of petitions and advocacy, their determination led to the creation of the No. 2 Construction Battalion in July 1916, headquartered in Pictou, Nova Scotia.
It became the largest Black military unit in Canadian history, composed primarily of men from Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Ontario, and the United States who refused to let discrimination silence their patriotism.
These men built roads, railways, and lumber camps, providing the raw materials and infrastructure that sustained Allied forces. Despite facing segregation and racism both at home and abroad, their discipline and perseverance exemplified courage under injustice.
The legacy of the No. 2 Construction Battalion endures as a cornerstone of both Black and Canadian military history. Their service challenged the deep racial inequalities of the time and paved the way for greater inclusion in the Canadian Armed Forces. In recent years, their story has been formally recognized through national commemorations, including an official apology from the Government of Canada in 2022.
Today, their descendants and our African Nova Scotian communities continue to honour their memory, ensuring that the Battalion’s fight for equality and equity remains an enduring part of Canada’s collective story.

Lest We Forget.
