ONE North End Community Economic Development Society is hiring an African Nova Scotian and Black (ANSB) Community Food Programs Coordinator. This role focuses on designing and delivering community food sovereignty programs, supporting Afrocentric meal initiatives, and advancing food justice, security, and community engagement within African Nova Scotian and Black communities.

This designated position is intended for applicants of African Nova Scotian heritage with proven track records of working effectively within ANS communities, understanding of food advocacy initiatives and dedication to representing and upholding community interests. The position offers $30.00 per hour ($1,800 bi-weekly) on a 30-hour work week. The application deadline is July 14.

Programs, Events, Grants & Additional Opportunities:

  NEW   The North End Halifax New Roots Community Land Trust is hosting two events over the next week. First, a Housing Needs Assessment Community Presentation. This event will share key findings from the Housing Needs Assessment and provide an opportunity for community members to discuss initiatives that support equitable housing. The event will take place on Wednesday, July 8, 2026, from 6:00–8:00 p.m. at the Phoenix Youth and Community Centre, 123 Jarvis Lane.

The second event will feature a community discussion on Community Land Trust initiatives and invite residents to share their perspectives on local housing priorities. This event will take place on Thursday, July 16, 2026, from 6:00–8:00 p.m., also at the Phoenix Youth and Community Centre, 123 Jarvis Lane. Residents who complete a Housing Needs Assessment on-site will receive a $50 grocery store gift card. Anyone including all community members are welcome and encouraged to come!

  NEW   DanceFlow Halifax is hosting Summer Afro Dance Classes. These fun, beginner-friendly classes offer an opportunity to learn Afro dance, stay active, and connect with the community in a welcoming environment. Classes take place every Saturday in July 2026 from 6:00–7:30 p.m. at Halifax Dance Studio, 1505 Barrington Street. The cost is $5 per class, and registration is required.   NEW   The Gottingen Street Festival is returning for its annual community celebration. This free, family-friendly event features live music, local vendors, food, arts and culture, and activities for all ages, celebrating the unique spirit and diverse heritage of the Gottingen Street and Uniake Square community. The festival takes place on Saturday, July 11, 2026, from 1:00–6:00 p.m. on Gottingen Street.

    BIPOC Writers Connect is a virtual one‑day conference designed for Black, Indigenous, and racialized emerging writers across Canada. Hosted by The Writers’ Union of Canada, the program creates a supportive space for mentorship, skill‑building, and community. Participants receive one‑on‑one feedback from a professional writer, join a query‑letter workshop, hear from an industry panel, and connect with fellow emerging writers. Eligible applicants must be 18 or older by the conference date, have at least one published piece, and submit 10–20 pages of a work‑in‑progress for manuscript review. Writers with full‑length published books or previous participation in this program are not eligible. Applications close July 26, 2026, with selected mentees notified in September.   The Discovery Centre, in partnership with Efficiency Nova Scotia, is offering a free Future of Efficiency Girls’ Camp for students in grades 7–10. The camp runs July 13–17 and August 10–14 at the Discovery Centre in Halifax and introduces participants to engineering, technology, energy efficiency, special guest sessions, and field trips.     NSCC is offering a one‑year Disability Support Professional Certificate Program  beginning  September 2026. This program trains students to support persons with disabilities through a rights‑based, community‑focused approach, and includes two mandatory field placements. A full bursary covering tuition, textbooks, and fees is available for eligible Canadian citizens and permanent residents who commit to one year of employment with Nova Scotia’s Disability Support Program after graduation.   The MacPhee Centre for Creative Learning is seeing passionate community members to join its  Volunteer Board of Directors, with a strong interest in connecting with and reflecting the African Nova Scotian community. Based in downtown Dartmouth, the Centre empowers youth ages 12–19 through free, arts-based programming that builds confidence, creativity, and opportunity. Scholarships & Bursaries:

  NEW  The University of Dalhousie is offering 2 scholarships:

1: The WeAreAllCS African Nova Scotian and African Descent Student Entrance Scholarship offers up to $10,000 over two years for eligible students of African descent entering the Bachelor of Computer Science or Bachelor of Applied Computer Science programs at Dalhousie University. Preference is given to applicants who identify as African Nova Scotian or Black Canadian. Recipients also gain access to professional development opportunities and events through the WeAreAllCS initiative and its partners. Click HERE for more information.

2: Dalhousie University is offering an $32,000 ($8,000 per year renewable for 4 years) bursarie. This scholarship is available for any program, eligible to all African Nova Scotian, First Nations, Indigenous and Black students from Atlantic Canada who demonstrate good academic standing and financial need.     The Nova Scotia Government is offering a couple scholarships for African Nova Scotian students.

1. The  Science Profession Scholarship offers up to $7,000 for eligible Black African Nova Scotian students pursuing full‑time studies in priority programs such as Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, or Engineering. The scholarship is renewable for up to three consecutive years. Application deadline is July 31, 2026. Click HERE for more information.

2. The  Post‑Secondary Award provides $2,500 to eligible Black African Nova Scotian students enrolled full‑time in an undergraduate university program. Applicants must be graduates of the Nova Scotia school system and demonstrate leadership through community involvement, student activities, or athletics. The award is available to students in any undergraduate year, with renewal based on satisfactory academic standing. Application deadline is July 31, 2026. Click HERE for more information.

3. The  Community College/Trade School Award provides $1,800 to eligible Black African Nova Scotian students enrolled full‑time in an approved community college, private career college, or trade school. Applicants must be graduates of the Nova Scotia school system. The award is available for one year, with a second year of funding possible for two‑year programs based on satisfactory academic standing. Application deadline is July 31, 2026. FREE MENTAL HEALTH SUPPORTS

are providing support to people of African Descent in Nova Scotia with their Provincial Impact Toll Free Line . This includes mental health supports, social supports, education information and supports, public health COVID-19 information and supports, and much more! Call them, toll free @ 1-855-732-1253.

African Nova Scotian and Black youth across Canada deserve mental health and well-being support informed by their rich cultures and diverse lived experiences. RiseUp powered by Kids Help Phone is a national, 24/7, bilingual E-Mental Health Support Service for Black youth. The service is free and available from coast to coast to coast. Nova Village NS is now offering FREE family (with youth up to the age of 19), couple, perinatal counselling and mental health assessments — available virtually or in person. This service is provided by a registered counselling therapist. In addition, there is a monthly peer support group for new moms and a 6-week mental wellness program.

They are open from 5 pm to 8 pm on Tuesdays & Thursdays for over the phone appointments, and Wednesday's for in-person appointments at 2131 Gottingen Street.
